Miami’s NW 79th street is a notoriously dangerous strip where fast cars dart through traffic and often plow into unsuspecting pedestrians. Sadly, more than half of the residents on that street are below the poverty line and must walk to and from work or school on a regular basis. This makes for a deadly combination, and between 2008 and 2013, 4 pedestrians were killed in the same block between N Miami Ave, and NE First Avenue.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated scenario in the Miami area and across the United States. Pedestrian deaths are soaring in low-income areas, even as traffic fatalities have declined. Of the more than 22,000 pedestrians that were killed nationwide between 2008 and 2012, poor neighborhoods account for the majority of those killed–nearly twice that of higher income neighborhoods.
Miami-Dade County’s low income Census noted that poorer pedestrians faced a death rate of 16.5 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people–compared with the 8.9 for the rest of Miami. Yet while higher profile areas in Miami have been targeted for pedestrian and road improvements, lower income areas are often neglected. Pedestrians are then left to cross the street at their own risk. This is one of the reasons why Miami continues to rank as one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians in all the United States.
Another reason is that Miami is home to a wide range of immigrants who are not always accustomed to the rules of the road–or the dangers. While law enforcement officials turn their attention to drug crimes or gun violence, pedestrians continue to be put in harms way–especially those who live in Miami’s poor neighborhoods.
